Introduction to Listserve: what is it and what is it good for?

The list server broadcasts notices, but does not reveal recipient subscriber Email addresses in those notices. Other list server subscribers (club members) could obtain subscribers' Email addresses if they really worked at it, but the SEBC club list server administrator will not share the email address list with other organizations.

We would like you to receive posts from the Sierra Express Bicycle Club list server, because we want you:

  • to feel included (doesn't that feel better already?).
  • to receive ride information as quickly as possible.
  • to facilitate the distribution of club information by club members.
  • to receive occasional reminders about important club events, such as the monthly meeting, parties, etc.

Each message will come with [SEBC] pre-pended to the SUBJECT line.

You may unsubscribe at any time using the method described below.

To subscribe: please use the membership maintenance form. Subscriptions will be granted only to current club members in good standing. Requests must be approved by the membership administrator, which can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

The subscribed Email address will have access to the archives, calendar, or other member Email addresses only if its lessor develops (or has developed) a Yahoo Groups sign-in. We *strongly* encourage you to do this if you have not already. (Developing a Yahoo groups sign-in does not require posts from this listserve to be delivered to an @yahoo.com Email address - they can be delivered to any address).

How to use the listserve, posting a message

Only SEBC club members who have also subscribed to the listserve may post announcements. Expect a delay of a few minutes between submission and distribution. The posting subscriber will see his/her message as incoming mail with [SEBC] automatically pre-pended to the SUBJECT line.

Please annotate your posts with SUBJECT lines that are descriptive, unique, and specific in nature. This helps ensure that a post does not end up in the trash bin, or remain unread by subscribers who receive large volumes of email each day. In your SUBJECT line, describe (succinctly) "what, where, when, deadline." Because many subscribers' Email programs do not display overly long SUBJECT lines, brevity is best - less than 64 characters in most cases. If there is a deadline or meeting date involved, place it in the subject line.

Each message will come with [SEBC] pre-pended to the SUBJECT line. It is added automatically - you do not have to type [SEBC] yourself.

When replying to a post, *please* distinguish between sending your reply to the entire list, or just the post-er. (You can do either or both). Be considerate of subscribers' time. Is your reply really of interest to everyone on the list, or does it concern only the author of a post to which you are replying? High traffic on listserves tends to drive subscribers away, or render them inattentive. This listserve is the only way SEBC has to reach its members, as there is no paper newsletter.

What may be posted to the listserve, what is disallowed, and censure

Please consider the following guidelines when posting to this list server:

  • Because many subscribers are on rather slow dial-up modems, notices posted should not be overly long, contain large embedded files, or include attached files.
  • Attached files are removed from posts for the following reasons: Attached files are not archived with the message that attempted to deliver them, so they would be unavailable to subscribers who peruse the archives. Many subscribers will not, can not, or don't know how to open attached files. Attached files can deliver viruses and worms that many subscribers do not have protection against.
  • Notices posted may include committee business announcements, rides and trips, late-breaking news about scheduled rides and trips, requests related to scheduled rides and trips such as carpool plans, and certain political notices. Announcements not otherwise qualified per these stipulations may be posted if pre-approved by the SEBC President or Vice President or List Moderator.
  • Please annotate your posts with SUBJECT lines that are descriptive, unique, and specific in nature.
  • Notices posted must be specific to the club and its activities - other topics are not tolerated. We don't want to read about the wonders of herbal supplements on this list. Announcements not otherwise qualified per these stipulations may be posted if pre-approved by the SEBC President or Vice President or List Moderator.
  • Notices posted must be non-commercial in nature. You may advertise your personal bicycle-related equipment for sale, but not the entire contents of your cousin's bicycle shop sale inventory. Please don't advertise your son's car for sale just because you drove it to a club event once. Please remove long signatures containing advertisements for your business out of your posts; this refers to items such as all 11 phone numbers for each of three branch offices with their street addresses, that your potential clients just must see at the bottom of every message from you. Announcements not otherwise qualified per these stipulations may be posted if pre-approved by the SEBC President or Vice President or List Moderator.
  • Political notices are welcome if related to bicycling. Examples include issues related to trail access, traffic horror stories, and tales of clueless drivers and perhaps even the punishment you inflicted upon them.
  • Notices posted should not contain anyone's personal information (such as telephone numbers, Email addresses, physical addresses, etcetera) unless they have agreed to it in advance.
  • Notices posted should not contain defamatory, inciteful, discriminatory, or primarily hateful language, even if the politics rile you up.
  • Photos: The list server and club website welcome photos of club activities. But please don't embed every large image file you took of last week's ride with your new digital camera. Attached files are disallowed for reasons described elsewhere in this FAQ. If you want to refer to large pictures, maps, articles, etcetera, place them on your web site, or the list server's web site, then post a link to that content. The list server moderator can provide assistance with this.

Subscribers who violate these policies may be subject to censure by the list server moderator. This can include having privileges reduced to "posts must be approved by moderator" or having posting privileges removed entirely.

Each message will come with [SEBC] pre-pended to the SUBJECT line. This is automatically added by the listserver.
